Membrane-based conceptual design of reuse water production from candy factory wastewater

Abstract Intense pressure on water resources has led to efforts reuse reclaimed processing wastewater in the food industry. There are tight rules for quality, but efficient separation technologies such as reverse osmosis possess good possibilities reuse. This study developed a membrane-based concept from candy industry emphasizing pre-treatment stage reduce fouling. The contained suspended solids, sugar compounds and ingredients gelation, which had tendency foul membranes, making essential successful concept. Cross-rotational ultrafiltration, featured enhanced fouling prevention functioned well removal of challenging substances. Conventional filtration were impractical due low flux, even when viscosity was reduced using surfactants. high chemical oxygen demand, meaning that there strong potential also osmotic pressure. A spiral wound pre-treated, it produced quality with respect all other studied parameters except demand. However, demand rejection 99% since concentration originally very high.
